Almena (Barron County)

The Israel Edelstein family (of six) and the Moritz Edelstein family (of 2) settled here to farm in 1893 with the help of the Jewish Agriculturists' Aid Society, Chicago.

Earl and Adeline Berkowitz raised their family here. Son Mike Berkowitz was killed in World War II. In August 2003, a local radio station broadcast either a recording or a re-creation of a WWII-era broadcast that reported on Mike Berkowitz's death during the war.
