Monroe (Green County)
Solomon Levitan officiated at Yom Kippur services here in the 19th century. Isaac Barnett "used to dry his eyes many times when I used to officiate in Monroe, Wisconsin, on Yom Kippur," Levitan wrote. "At that time, he was the great Jewish leader. Therefore God helped him and he is today the president of the Barnett Woolen Company."
Reported to have 10 or fewer Jews in 1927.
Levitan and attorney Sam Blum of Monroe received 50-year certificates from the Smith Masonic lodge No. 31 of Monroe in 1934 or 1935. Asked why he retained membership in the lodge after moving to Madison and becoming a banker and state treasurer, Levitan, 76, replied, "If they were good enough to take me in when I was just a pack peddler, I certainly felt I shouldn't leave this lodge because I had a better job."
