Door County (Door County)
This vacation land on Wisconsin's "thumb," the Door County peninsula, has been home to smatterings of Jewish life. Sturgeon Bay, the county seat, was listed as having "10 Jews or less" in 1927. Rabbi Jay Brickman of Milwaukee recalls that when he and his family first visited the county in the mid-1950s, "One of the only places to stay was Little Sister Resort, because it was one of the few places Jews were welcome. But we never felt an open discrimination." In recent years, Jewish residents have opened their homes to one another and guests on Friday nights for Sabbath services.
