Granddaughter Mariann Littell, her brother and mother lived with the Franklins on the Bristol farm. She remembers accompanying her grandfather as he peddled fruits and vegetables to homes in Paddock Lake and Twin Lakes.
The family ate kosher meat bought from a Kenosha butcher until he closed up shop. Then the family ordered meat from Chicago. Sabbath observance was difficult, because the animals needed tending, and much local commerce took place on Saturday.
Mariann and her brother attended cheder (religious school) at B'nei Zedek Synagogue in Kenosha. Mariann remembers Rabbi Henry Lieberman of B'nei Zedek as "everything a rabbi should be." She attended public school in Bristol.
